Triboelectric dust monitor

The care towards the reducing of the atmospheric pollution has pushed the engineers of ETG to develop devices based on the triboelectric principle.

The Photoelectric system, at the base of our experience matured previously to an important Firm that operated in the dust collection sector, is a worth system, but it is subjected to several problems of maintenance and different kind, like:

- Difficulty in the alignment between Projector an Receiver, with possibility of variations due to the deformation of the mechanic supports,
  in  presence of thermal variations.

- Spurious signals in presence of mechanic vibrations.

- Necessity to drain the optic groups using dry and clean air.

The installation of a triboelectric probe is easy and it is constituted by only one element.

The triboelectric system need an anti-condense device only in presence of condensing humidity. It doesn't require maintenance in dry processes.

Recent applications has extended the employment of our triboelectric detectors also in presence of oily fogs and without need cleaning.

The triboelectric principle is based on the energy produced by the collision of the dust particles against a metallic electrode, and by the electric field transmitted by the nearby particles.

The intensity of the energy is proportional to the impacts speed and it depend also by the physic properties of the dust.

ABSTRACT

Since time ago, even the official authorities agree about that to install systems for the continuous monitoring  of the dust leakages, it the best   solution for the detection in filter plants, rather than the periodical gravimetric measures. This because a filter failure may happen even just after the periodic gravimetric sample has been performed.

In Italy, some local authorities dispense from the duty of the periodic gravimetric measures, firms which use systems for the continuous monitoring of dusts emissions.

The isokinetic sample will be always the reference test for fiscal controls and for the calibration of other dust monitoring systems.

The major benefit of the continuous monitoring compared to the periodical samples, it is to detect a filter failure when the damage and the leakage are still in the very early status. Operating in the proper way on the filter, this prevent dust emissions over the admitted limit.

In filters cleaned using air upstream jets, the shacking of the filter's tissue cause the emission of both the dust that trend to occlude the puncture in the filter's tissue and the dust deposited near it.

The presence of the air shot, allow to detect  punctures wide even only 1 cm2 opened on surfaces hundreds of m2 wide.
